ABOUT NANI

Nani is a Seattle based portrait | event | wedding photographer, currently resides in Bellevue, WA with her husband & 3 naughty but funny Maltese doggies. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, CA) with MBA degree in 2001. She then worked as an Accountant & later, Treasury Analyst at Westfield Corporation, Los Angeles, CA. She moved to Washington State in 2005 & has been loving it here ever since! =)

A self-taught non-cookie-cutter photographer, she loves to capture & freeze special moments of you & your family to be treasured forever, presenting them to you as memories to cherish forever.

Her preferred style for wedding event is portrait journalism | documentary. Most photos are taken candid & with few requested posed photos. Each image is captured & carefully crafted from the heart as she sees it.

Beth S., as written on her blog (engagement): EEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!!! :) Engagement photos are here, and if you can’t tell, I am THRILLED with the beautiful work of our photographer, Nani Oei, owner of Nani Oei Photography. There should have been an audio recording of me as I watched each photo import from the CD to my iPhoto library: “Oh. My. Gosh.” “Ah, I love that one!!” and other excited noises that can’t take the form of written word were exclaimed from my smiling lips. I am SO IMPRESSED with Nani’s work. We took these photos on Sunday, she had the sneak peak posted Sunday night, and I received the digital copy of the photos delivered First Class to my doorstep this Wednesday. Amazing. Taking these photos with her was so easy! Kyle and I felt very much at ease; perhaps too at easy, as Nani had a few laughs at Kyle’s quick response in following her command of, “Kiss her.” :) We went to the University of Washington campus and she knew all the right places to go. A few shots in one location and we were off to the next, with a little wardrobe changing in between. The only tricky photo we had was the up-close shot of the ring. Kyle’s fingernails were covered in a mix of clay from his studio model and oil from his bike. I had to wrap my fingers around his to make sure his dirty nails didn’t show themselves! Talking with Nani for those two hours was great, and the sun even came out during our session! Thanks so much Nani for your professional work and your kindness towards us; we will cherish these photos forever!

Alison L. for {Alison + Brian's} couple photo shoot
My husband and I recently worked with Nani to do a couples shoot in downtown Seattle as part of a Christmas gift for our families. It was the first time we'd had professional pictures taken since our wedding day (11 years ago!).

I contacted Nani after reading other yelp reviews, and I was excited to learn that she was available on the day we had in mind. We talked back and forth through email for a week or so, and she answered all of my questions and suggested a good starting point in Pike Place.

We met up with her exactly at the time and place she'd said, and she was extremely friendly and chatty, which put us both at ease (we're not very outgoing and were both nervous about the shoot). It was miserable and raining out, which was unfortunate, but Nani had come prepared with a pretty umbrella to use as a prop, and she never let the rain stop her from getting a shot even once. By the time we were really starting to get into the shoot, we didn't notice the rain much at all. She was very professional, knew exactly what shots she was looking for, and made sure that she got them as quickly as possible without making either of us feel rushed. She was very good at giving us both direction (whether we were any good at taking it, you'll have to ask her!), which was a big help since, as I said before, neither of us had done a shoot like this in years.

After the shoot, she told us she'd send us the pictures on a disc in about 3 weeks. I asked if she could email me a couple of them before that so that I could get Christmas cards made for my family in England and have them mailed out in time for Christmas. She told me that was no problem. I expected to get 3, maybe 4 pictures from her within a week, but by midnight that same day, I had 11 to choose from!!!

The pictures were gorgeous, you couldn't even tell it was raining, and everyone loves them!

Again, Nani went above and beyond with her presentation when she sent the picture disc to us. The disc had one of our pictures printed on it, and it came in a decorative envelope, tied with a string and a little metal charm. She'd also printed up a few of the pictures for us and included those. During our initial email contact, she'd told me a shoot like the one I wanted would usually result in about 20 pictures, but we got double that amount on the disc! We were blown away and extremely happy.

If we decide to do another shoot like this, I'll definitely be asking Nani to take the pictures!

Dana L. for {Dana + Jessica's} best friend photo shoot
My best friend and I were lucky enough to happen upon Nani recently to do a photo shoot for us. Both of us had no idea what to expect since the photos weren't for any of the normal reasons you hire a photographer like a wedding or other event. My best friend and I have known each other since preschool but now live on opposite ends of the country and very rarely get to travel to see each other. So, we thought it would be fun to have some neat photos of us during our visit together in Seattle. After spending all morning wondering what the shoot would be like, how we should pose, and what we should do... we arrived at our arranged meeting place (a half hour late due to traffic and she didn't even bat an eye! We felt SO bad) and were instantly put at ease when Nani introduced herself and got to know us a little before taking photos. For a couple hours my friend and I laughed and joked and wandered around Pike Place Market. Nani caught EVERY perfect moment. Some that I don't even remember happening or wouldn't even have thought to photograph. I thought for sure that there would only be a few good photos of me but I loved each and every one. When we finished my friend and I felt like we had made a new friend. We were sad that the shoot was over.
As for the photos... I was blown away at how fast we got a first glimpse on Nani's website. And then, soon after that I received a gorgeous package in the mail which contained a disk of the photos, a case for the disk with beautiful image of my friend and I on it, and copies of a few photos that Nani particularly liked. The way the package was presented felt so special that I still have it. It really felt as though Nani put her heart into the entire process.
I can't help but add that I saw a one star review on here for Nani. I have to think that these people never met Nani in person and that messages were somehow misconstrued over email because I can not imagine her being anything but kind, courteous and professional. If you have an event coming up that you need a photographer for or even if you want to treat yourself to a little photo shoot to capture a special day with someone in your life that means a lot to you, Nani has this really rare and impressive talent for perfectly capturing exactly how you are feeling. To this day, whenever someone mentions that they need a photographer for something I get so excited to tell them about Nani. The photos that she took for myself and my friend will always help me to remember the amazing day that we had during her visit to Seattle. Not to mention they are just about the only pictures I have of myself that I look photogenic in... getting photos taken of myself is not one of my strong points. Thanks for that Nani!

Amy H. for {Amy + Dan's} wedding
My husband and I used Nani for not only our engagement photos, but also our wedding photos. I'm soooo glad that we did! The photos turned out amazing, and Nani paid extra attention to the smallest details that made our wedding portfolio stellar. We called her the photography "Ninja", because for only one person, she seemed to be everywhere all at once and captured EVERYTHING. My father-in-law said it best (and he is also a photographer) -- "Your photography was more than pictures...they capture the *mood*."
Nani is also incredibly professional. As someone who works in business, the contract was incredibly well thought out and reasonable. She was prompt in getting back to us and very fair not only in her prices but also availability. She was there from the start of our wedding day to the end. She was amazing.
I have since referred Nani to several people, and after seeing our photos on Facebook, a friend of a friend also booked her for shots of her and her husband. SHE was so pleased that she later booked Nani for her son's Bar Mitzvah. Very cool. I love seeing amazing artists take off.
I plan on using Nani for all of our family milestones.

A.G. W. for {Rebecca + A.G.'s} wedding
My wife and I had Nani do our wedding photos at the end of September. We chose her because of the beauty she captures in almost every shot and we were not disappointed. She was extremely flexible, blended into the background during the wedding shots (a small, outdoor ceremony - so not the easiest task) and got an abundance of perfect shots. We love her ability to capture candid moments in a way that makes them look too complex to truly be candid - but indeed they are.
Nani was extremely sweet and easy going - her manner allowed us to roll through our wedding day with full confidence she was capturing the things we wanted - but without even having to think about it at all - which is perfect.
We'd use her services again in a micro-second. She was really easy to communicate with when making arrangements and drawing up a contract, very responsive to our needs and silly questions (the quickness of her replies to our emailed questions was truly shocking).
I can't say it enough. Hire Nani! You won't be sorry.

Lorelei H. for {Lorelei + Josh's} anniversary photo session
My man and I are not the kind of people who can easily get in front of a camera and work it. "Awkward" and "not photogenic" are a few ways one could describe us. Our normally lovely smiles generally become pinched and nervous when someone points a camera at us.
However. This did not happen at our photo session with Nani! We asked her to take some photos for us as an anniversary memento, so we met up with her one morning to take some pictures. We felt super comfortable and had lots of fun chatting with her throughout the session. She would give short and sweet suggestions for poses/actions, which was great for us--awkward people like us will perhaps always be awkward people, but we did much better in front of Nani's camera than we normally do because of her direction.
We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly Nani got the photos onto her site and then in the mail to us. She even printed out a couple of the photos and included them with the disc of photo files! Another really thoughtful thing: she included two sets of the same photos; one set of giant-sized/high-resolution pics (good for all kinds of printing), and one set of smaller ones (good for uploading to photo-sharing sites).
And the final, finished products! Nani comes up with pictures that look natural, dreamy, and romantic--not cheesy or overwrought. The colours are striking without looking fake. Simply beautiful! We're very happy to have such a beautiful set of pictures.
I'm just so glad that I found her advert (on craigslist! I was expecting to settle on an amateur student photographer but somehow stumbled onto Nani!). :D
Postscript: I asked my definitely-not-verbose manpanion for input into this review and he said (in his Taiwanese accent), "There is nothing I am not satisfied!!"

Rachel L. for {Rachel + John's} wedding
When my husband and I were looking for wedding photographers, I was absolutely amazed at the beauty of Nani Oei's photos. Her style and vision matched my dream wedding shots perfectly!!! I was so thrilled when I talked to her to find that she was available and would fit into our budget (the quality of her photos made me think she would be one of those crazy expensive photographers one finds in the bridal magazines that costs double the budget of the whole wedding!).
At our first meeting, we hit it off immediately, she was professional yet funny and very kind. She was very flexible with us in all of our needs. Nani communicated with us regularly to help keep my mind at ease and figured everything out ahead of time so she would be ready for anything.
The day of the wedding, she came nearly an hour earlier than I had expected, just in case. She somehow managed to catch every single special moment without anyone realizing she was there!! The traditional posed shots were perfect, but it was the candid moments she caught that blew me away!! She completely captured the mood and spirit of the day. She even managed to catch some very tender moments of my husband and I right after the ceremony that she took through a small slit of a window!! Those are my favorite ones!
Within just a day or two she had shots already available to see on her website, and very quickly we received a beautiful wedding album along with the cd of all of our pictures (hundreds!!!).
I have been telling all of my girlfriends about her, and we intend to book her services again for all of our special moments in life. We are just so in love with her work and working with her!

The first time my husband and I met Nani to talk about photographing our big day, not only did she show up extremely prepared, but she even bought me a coffee! My wife and I hired Nani Oei for our engagement photos. The reason we chose her was because she was priced reasonably and very flexible, and of course her previous pictures looked good. We weren't sure exactly what we wanted but knew we wanted to do multiple places in Seattle. Nani Oei not only helped us to find great locations all conveniently located from one another but researched times and spots that we hadn't even thought of. I'd say that overall I was impressed by my experience with her as well as her photos.
-Side note, I noticed the negative review on here and just wanted to point out that I found her very flexible for both scheduling and location. And, I neither experienced or felt that Nani Oei was in anyway unprofessional or unreasonable. Needless to say, We're definitely hiring her for our wedding reception!

Wow, if I could give her more stars, I would!!! Nani made our 1940's themed evening wedding so magical. I know the event would not have been exactly what I wanted had she not been my photographer. I have never seen anyone who can do evening wedding pictures like Nani. Most photographers get too "flashy" once it's dark, with pictures that make people look too washed out and the background non-existant. If you are having a night wedding, you MUST book Nani! My long time boyfriend and myself had a photoshoot with Nani Oei on march 15th 2011. It was a gusty day and a bit cold and rainy but we all made the best of it. Besides letting us go over time with out charging us she also let us take a coffee break to warm ourselves. She was so helpful on poses and has vision that could rival Eric Ryan Anderson (leading photographer in the 2010). She was easy to work with and at first look you may think, this is going to be hard, but she speaks clearly and directs you into loving or fun poses that are so real they actually cured a fight I had with my boyfriend before the shoot. She finishes by sending you your pictures in beautiful boxes with ribbon ... she goes the extra miles in every way. I hope I need Photo's again just so i can work with her! Thanks Nani

I really like the vintage style photography so when I found Nani on craigstlist I was beyond excited! My husband and I hired Nani for our wedding photographs. Our wedding was very small, just an intimate court house affair, but we were looking for a small photo shoot, of just the two of us. I described to Nani the atmosphere that we wanted for the photographs, and she found us locations to match. From the start, Nani was very accomodating, very nice and efficient. Contract and preparations were easy and straightforward. Even though it was just the two of us, she made it feel very special and gave us full attention. My fiance' and I hired Nani to do a photoshoot including our dogs and to say that we liked her work would be an understatement. We loved it!! We ended up hiring her for a second session with just the two of us.
I can tell you that Nani is very patient and kind. We have three dogs and they were a bit crazy so I know the first session could not have been easy but she got some great shots and was so patient. She is also a dog lover so that is always a plus! :) I wasn't sure I would like any of the pictures taken of me (I never do) but she caught some amazing moments that really were "us", in spite of having three crazy dogs! She has a great eye and an uncanny ability to catch you in that special moment.
Our second photo session was also amazing! I love so many of our photos and honestly will say that Nani exceeded our expectations of any photographer. She also has a very easygoing personality and a great sense of humor. I wasn't sure how I would feel having someone follow us around taking photos but we both felt very comfortable with her. It felt very natural. I also feel as though I left the session with a new friend.
Nani has a blog, and is on FB, and I love to see her work as she takes new photos. She never fails to amaze me in her ability to create the most beautiful pictures and capture unforgettable, meaningful moments. Her work also never seems stagnant and you usually do not see the same type of photo twice. Most likely, this is because she usually doesn't pose you. So, the pictures are very natural.
I really cannot say enough great things about Nani. Hire her and you will not be disappointed. But, you will be left with beautiful photos that you will cherish forever! I am so happy we found her! Thank you, Nani! :)

Nani is a great photographer. I had her for my wedding back in August 2010. She made great impression right after our first meeting. She has great quality that you hope for in any vendor. I wanted to give my best friend a gift for when we visited her home in Seattle. A friend of mine gave me the idea of pictures from a hired photographer. I looked on Seattle Craigslist and (through fate or magic) found Nani and instantly loved her pictures! On short notice, I was able to book Nani for a Saturday at the market.
We were late for our appointment and felt terrible but Nani was so sweet despite our tardiness!
I'm not one to like having my picture taken but being with my best friend and having Nani very sweetly direct us made it a lot easier. Nani was so fun and funny that the whole session was laid back and we ended up having a blast! She has an amazing eye and the photos were beautiful! She found great colors and liked to let us be creative ;)
Not only did we have fun the day of, the turn-around time was remarkable. Nani quickly edited and posted our photos on her website so we could see them soon after. Then she sent the rest of the photos on a disk in a gorgeous artistic package. I sent my family the link to her website and everyone who has seen them can't say enough good about them.
I have since recommended friends out here on the east coast who are getting married to hire Nani or someone like her because she took my favorite pictures ever!
This all happened in April 2010 and I still routinely talk about Nani and want to have her out east to take pictures for me :) She puts out a beautiful product and her kind and fun personality are an added bonus!
